The ski clubs, and how access actually works

The landscape

The Niagara Escarpment between Thornbury and Collingwood carries a string of alpine operations, and they split into two completely different systems:

The private clubs - member-owned, each with its own culture and its own programs. Blue Mountain - the big public resort: buy a ticket or a pass, ski. The distinction shapes everything about winter here, including the seasonal rental market - club families are a large share of the people renting places for the winter.

The clubs, at a glance

• Georgian Peaks - the closest to Thornbury, and the biggest skiing in Southern Ontario: the highest vertical, the longest runs, and a hill that hosts FIS-sanctioned racing. Family club with serious alpine programs. It is where I ski - more below.
• Alpine - the Peaks’ next-door neighbour: 384 acres of terrain overlooking Georgian Bay, a striking modern clubhouse, and a strong generations-of-families culture.
• Craigleith - along the escarpment toward Blue Mountain since 1958: 33 groomed trails, six lifts, terrain parks, a full Snow School, and a summer side with tennis and mountain biking.
• Osler Bluff - above Collingwood for more than 75 years, with a claim the others cannot make: the most skiable terrain per member of any private club in Ontario. Big summer program too - tennis, pickleball, pool.
• Toronto Ski Club - the different model: a private clubhouse at the base of Blue Mountain, running since 1924. You ski the resort’s terrain and come home to a club - a lower-commitment way into club life.
• Blue Mountain - the public resort, Ontario’s biggest, and the economic engine of the whole area: the Village, the terrain parks, night skiing, four-season everything. No membership, no process - more on it below.

What “private club” means in practice

Not day tickets - membership. Each club has its own membership process, most have wait-lists and initiation fees, and guests ski as pre-registered guests of a member. I am happy to offer insight into joining a private club if you are interested.

What I can tell you from experience: the Peaks skis bigger than anything else in Ontario, because it is - about 820 feet of vertical, the province’s highest, enough to hold FIS-standard slalom and giant slalom races. Roughly two dozen trails, real snowmaking, and race and development programs that are the reason a lot of families join. Founded 1960. There is also a summer side - pool, courts, camps - that surprises people who think of it as a winter-only membership.

The feel is the sell: it is a family club where the same people are on the hill every weekend, and that continuity is what city families are actually buying.

Blue Mountain: the engine of the area

Fifteen minutes east of Thornbury sits the region’s economic engine and its biggest draw: Ontario’s largest ski resort, and a genuine four-season destination. The skiing is open to everyone - no membership, no process - and the Village around the base runs all year: restaurants and patios, shops, events, golf, the works. A lot of what makes this whole area thrive traces back to that hill.

Blue Mountain also carries a robust condo community of its own, with a completely different flair from Applejack - livelier, closer to the action, and with ownership structures built around the resort economy. Some buyers genuinely belong there; some are torn between the two worlds, and that is a good decision to have to make. I am happy to talk through both sides - contact me.

What this means if you are eyeing Applejack

The winter economy of this area runs on people sliding down the escarpment, and Applejack sits minutes from the hills with the walkable town attached. If you are a club family, you already understand the seasonal logic - the winter rental guides and the buying pages are the practical next step. If you are not, Blue Mountain means the skiing is yours anyway.
