If you are weighing a life split between the city and the bay, the drive is part of the decision, so start with the numbers. Thornbury sits about 160 kilometres northwest of the GTA, and from downtown Toronto it runs two to two and a half hours depending on where you start, when you leave, and what the sky is doing. I make it in every season.
The drive, season by season
Winter. This is snowbelt country, and the difference between a fine winter drive and a bad one is usually the last stretch, where squalls come off the bay and visibility can change in minutes. The rules that keep it boring: check the forecast for the destination and not just the departure city, leave margin, and respect the Friday-evening reality - you are sharing the road with every ski family in the GTA making the same run. Ask anyone who does this weekly, and timing the Friday departure is a small science.
Summer weekends. Cottage-country patterns: heavier northbound on Friday, heavier southbound on Sunday afternoon. Off-peak, it is an easy cruise.
Fall. The easiest and prettiest version of the trip - which is convenient, because the connoisseur’s season is the one worth timing a first visit around.
Once you are here
The area is car country - a car is part of the deal for the hills, the valley and the wider region, and regional transit is thin. But the daily-life exception is the whole point of Applejack’s location: the town itself is walkable, with groceries, the library, the community centre, downtown and the harbour all on foot from the community. Park the car Friday night; plenty of weekends, it does not move again until Sunday.
Worth the drive?
